Cairn #1

This ongoing project was inspired by the work of Tony Cragg and Andy Goldsworthy. In Scottish tradition, people have been assembling Cairns as way-markers, burial sights and points of importance for hundreds of years. They are assembled with the available material found in a given site and added to by passers by. In the urban landscape the available materials shift from the organic to the manufactured. In the public space people interact with these works more frequently. The sites have been chosen to promote exploration of inner city green spaces that are often either neglected or highly curated, reconnecting urban dwellers with the natural environment and inviting them to question the available materials used to construct these cairns.

Re:Cycling

“Re:Cycling” explores waste in the urban environment. I kept noticing these bikes left decaying in the streets, like carcasses picked over by vultures. It struck me as a terribly sad sight to see these objects that we often associate with freedom and mobility chained down to rust away in time and the elements. The cardboard facsimiles go through this process much faster, allowing the passer-by the chance to watch their steady breakdown as it unfolds and question the value of these discarded materials.

1 in 3

“1 in 3” was created in response to the child poverty crisis in Dundee. 1 in 3 children in Dundee live below the poverty line. I wanted to make an interactive work referencing items from a children’s play-park. The faces of each cube represent different housing complexes from around Dundee which are within the most heavily affected areas. When the blocks are spun, these differing environments can be directly contrasted, inviting conversation around the disparities they present.
